This week marks 10 years since the death of Gabrie

This week marks 10 years since the death of Gabriel García Márquez but with the recent publication of a posthumous novel and an upcoming TV series his name and legacy are here to stay for now. Regardless of how much he would approve or disapprove of these creations they are his ideas given new life in the hands of others, for better or worse.

It got me thinking of how the idea of legacy evolves over time and out of the control of its originator. The novel he wrote while living in Barcelona deals with these themes, although in the context of a very different type of empire, as a decrepit dictator wrestles with his own legend through centuries of his patriarchal power as his mind and palace collapse into chaos.

As the quote from @observer reads on the English cover implies "It asks to be read more than twice..." The book has far more to it than my paltry comparison above and is a book that achieves new depths with each reread.

P.S. quotes aside, how much better is that Spanish cover?

One of Barcelona's biggest literary secrets is a small literary museum in Villa Joan in Collserolla Natural Park. It has several rooms about local writers, literature in translation, books in relation to cities and several short films on similar topics. It also boasts an exhibition about the poet Jaacint Verdaguer exhibition upstairs. If the content and location weren't enough it also has free entry! It makes for a nice way to break up a hike in the hills behind the city.

The quote on the card featuring Víctor Català (whose most famous work is Solitude) reads "Let the earth tumble through the void, let the goldfinch sing: men pass, but Man remains."

From Rosa Maria Arquimbau's Forty Lost Years which gives an account of four decades of Catalan history during the Second Republic and the dictatorship through the eyes of a successful seamstress.

The translator, Peter Bush, and publisher, @fumdestampa won an @englishpen_ award for their translation from the original Catalan.

The photo was taken near Sagrada Familia.

A small exhibition on Stefan Zweig at @ateneubcn that runs until the end of the month. It details Zweig's travels, his escape from Europe as well as his life and death in Brasil.

The works of Zweig like many writers were subject to the attention of Franco's censors in Spain. However unlike other books which were outright banned or heavily censored Zweig's works seemed to follow a rollercoaster ride of rejection and approval with inconsistent notes from repentant censors despite tackling themes that were taboo throughout the dictatorship.

There is a nice academic article by @ines_cf available online that details the journey his works took through the censors.
