Muriel Rukeyser's Savages Coast is a book brought

Muriel Rukeyser's Savages Coast is a book brought to light by the splendid @feministpress after going unpublished for over 70 years. It captures the chaos of the initial days of the civil war in Barcelona through the eyes of a young journalist and poet. Despite not having the fame of many international writers associated with the civil war she was ahead of most of them in not only being here for the beginning but writing her book before many of them even arrived.

A belated happy International Translation Day! Pos

A belated happy International Translation Day! Possibly the best of all of the miscellaneous international days of the year. Without the hard work of translators around the world I never would have followed the nebulous path that led me to this tour and more importantly I wouldn't have discovered some of my favourite writers. It is only as I've read different translators of the same works and been increasing my reading in Spanish and Catalan over the years that I have truly learned to appreciate the work they do.

Catalan Book Week (La Setmana del Llibre en Català) is an event that promotes Catalan literature, culture and the language through a book market and activities including talks and tours. If you don't speak Catalan it can still be an interesting event to wander through and the occasional international author also make an appearance! @lasetmana

With the passing of Paul Auster this week I wanted

With the passing of Paul Auster this week I wanted to include a quote from him from his memoir The Invention of Solitude which has a Catalan connection with his brief mention of the philosopher Ramon Llull (who he calls Raymond Lull) in the second part of the book, The Book of Memory, as he touches on classical memory systems and mnemotechnics.

There is also a great discussion between Auster and the Catalan writer Enrique Vila-Matas back in 2009 during which their conversation includes the above book and how Auster's writing deals with enclosures, the geometry of architecture and open spaces. It can be found on the youtube channel of @penamerica

During a visit to Estonia I was lucky enough to get to visit some great bookshops in Tallinn and Tartu. @englishbookshoptallinn had an incredible selection of books in English including plenty of local writers in translation. Matilda, one of its knowledgeable owners, and @krisoraamatud in Tartu gave some great recommendations.

This week marks 10 years since the death of Gabrie

This week marks 10 years since the death of Gabriel García Márquez but with the recent publication of a posthumous novel and an upcoming TV series his name and legacy are here to stay for now. Regardless of how much he would approve or disapprove of these creations they are his ideas given new life in the hands of others, for better or worse.

It got me thinking of how the idea of legacy evolves over time and out of the control of its originator. The novel he wrote while living in Barcelona deals with these themes, although in the context of a very different type of empire, as a decrepit dictator wrestles with his own legend through centuries of his patriarchal power as his mind and palace collapse into chaos.

As the quote from @observer reads on the English cover implies "It asks to be read more than twice..." The book has far more to it than my paltry comparison above and is a book that achieves new depths with each reread.

P.S. quotes aside, how much better is that Spanish cover?
